Cultivating Community: Wyck’s Home Farm Foodways Project
Wyck Historic House, Garden, and Farm in Philadelphia launched the Home Farm Foodways Project in 2020 after examining our community’s needs for increased food security and food literacy. What began as an experiment ended up becoming much more: a safe green space for diverse, intergenerational, and therapeutic community engagement and a case study of how small historic houses and their collections can remain relevant to and benefit their neighboring communities. Join Wyck’s staff as we discuss the challenges and successes of implementing this program, lessons we learned, and how this project created an opportunity to utilize our site’s resources to meet a community need.

Curating for Community Impact: Finding Greater Purpose in our Work
Curating with a purpose and with an impact-driven mindset not only benefits our communities, but the museum staff working on the project, as well. When, from the on-set, we put positive community impact at the forefront, we find new solutions, new stories, and a new-found worth in our careers and lives. This session look at how we can find more joy and purpose at work by serving community through curation and programming by tracing the creation of the B&O Railroad Museum’s newest exhibition “The Underground Railroad: Freedom Seekers on the B&O Railroad” - from creating a meaningful mission statement, to conducting research, to engaging authentically with the community.

Pre-Registration Required | Off-Site Workshop at the Marshall Steam Museum: DIY Exhibits 2.0
In 2016, we led a popular SMA workshop about DIY exhibits on a budget. In conjunction with recent museum renovations, we updated and upgraded our exhibits, still on a budget and with our signature DIY approach! Join us at the Marshall Steam Museum to see for yourself the results of our labor as we share the new tips and tricks we’ve employed and invite you to try your hand at some of the techniques used. You will also learn how to create genuinely mobile exhibit components in a space where collections are constantly on the move (in our case, the museum’s vehicles are driven regularly on the open road so nothing can be fixed or permanent!). This will be a “show-share-and-try” workshop (with a fun takeaway for those inclined to participate), and attendees are encouraged to bring examples of how they have been creative with DIY exhibit components at their museums and historic sites.

Pre-registration is required and limited to 60 attendees, speakers, or sponsors/vendors of the 2023 conference. Registrants are also encouraged to carpool to the location. Click here for directions, parking, accessibility, and more information.

Introduction to NAGPRA for Small Museums
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was passed in 1990, requiring museums, universities, and any other collecting organization to report and return certain cultural items to the appropriate Native tribe or community, but over 30 years later, at least half of these institutions are still not in compliance with this law. This session is aimed towards students and museum professionals with the goal of fostering a deeper working understanding of NAGPRA requirements and how to achieve compliance with the ultimate goals of facilitating respectful return and building new, authentic relationships with indigenous communities.

Keynote: Prioritizing Joy and Showing Grace: A Small Museum Call to Action
Being a small museum person is a mindset. We pride ourselves on being determined, nimble, and thrifty. But for too long, we’ve also been, overworked, under-compensated, and treated poorly as a regular part of our day-to-day work.

Many small museum professionals started in the field because we believed in the power of history and the important role small museums can play in creating better communities. Because of our belief in the importance of the mission, we have rarely stopped to consider what we ourselves need to continue doing the work in a sustainable way. Post-2020, we’re all looking at our work lives with new eyes. Museum professionals are no different. We are nimble, thrift, and determined. Why not use those superpowers for our own well-being?

This keynote session will challenge small museum folks–paid staff, volunteers, board members, and funders lead the way in finding a new path where caring for those who do the work is a top priority.

Mental Health in Museums
We all love working in museums but sometimes the environment can be less than ideal. In this session a fellow museum professional who has gone through it will help facilitate open discussions, provide resources, and try and demystify the connection between mental health and museum work. Let’s come together to have honest discussions and support each other in the work that we are all so passionate about.

I felt a disclaimer may be needed and so here is one, though I know it goes over the limit.

Disclaimer: this session is not run by a mental health expert but rather a museum professional that has gone on their own mental health journey and has a desire to form community, bring awareness, and help others in the field.

Collections Stewardship Succession Planning: Your Input Needed!
Through a two-year project funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) and LYRASIS are gathering data and developing professional development resources to support succession planning for collections stewardship staff and volunteers. To gather input about experiences with succession planning across the small museums community, CCAHA and LYRASIS welcome Board members, staff leaders and emerging professionals at collecting institutions to share their experiences with succession planning strategies that have—and have not—achieved positive results. The session, structured as an informal conversation, will probe issues related to organizational structure, documentation and other related procedures for retaining and transferring knowledge; training and coaching for emerging leaders; considerations for organizational leadership; and other key considerations for succession planning.

Leveraging Partnerships with Local and State DMO (Destination Marketing Organization)
DMOs generally embrace their partnerships with museums because heritage tourism always ranks as one of the top activities for visitors. Recognizing that they are also a big part of the local community, museums are a place where residents take their visiting family and friends. When museums leverage their partnership with a DMO, they benefit from the "free" resources. Staff and volunteers achieve more success which can also lead to a positive work and volunteer environment.

From member votes to media trainings, from cough drops to rain ponchos, during the historic 19-day strike of Philadelphia Museum of Art Union workers we had to learn how to create a culture of care for ourselves on all levels. Show Up! Share Your Story and Build Authentic Connections with Others
A culture of care in the workplace begins with an inclusive environment. A truly inclusive environment is one in which people feel like they can show up as their authentic selves, be fully accepted, and thrive, free from the expectation of assimilation into the dominant culture of the organization. Feel empowered to build cultural competence as you own your story, in your words, in a safe and welcoming space.
